{!firstname}, Get off the machines!!! ( I'm going on a rant)

I was originally going to talk to you about about strengthand agility; however I had to deal with a couple of injuriesover the weekend due to poor exercise selection. These werepreventable injuries!

Two teenage boys came to me complaining of of upper thighpain. So I go through my "assessment"' type questions. In theend both boys were doing the same exercise... can you guesswhat it was?

Hint one - isolated muscle...Hint two -seated...

Figured it out yet?

If you guessed leg extension then you would be correct.Unfortunately still to this day many high school phys-edteachers are outdated with strength and conditioninginformation.

The same can be said for many soccer coaches andparents who played the sport in the "old" days. I saythis because of the several conversations I havewith parents new to me and the programs I participatein.

Back to this leg extension exercise. When you use theleg extension machine to build strength for the legs youforce the smaller "hip flexor" muscle to become shortened.

This then leads to the one quad muscle (rectus femoris-crosses the hip and knee joint) to work twice as hard toboth flex a the hip (knee to chest) and extend (straighten)at the knee.

Over time this leads to too much work and the muscle breaksdown resulting in a strain, tear or pull.

These boys would have been much better off to do morefunctional exercises like squats and lunges in a properlydesigned program like Youth Soccer Power Unleashed.

Next time I will talk about strength training and agility training.==================================
